Maritime students at Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro City improve their speaking skills—and bolster their career prospects—with the help of computer-based instruction that is integral to the Job Enabling English Proficiency (JEEP) Project designed and implemented by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program in partnership with the university. JEEP is helping to equip students in Mindanao with specific English language skills needed for jobs in high-growth sectors such as travel and tourism, nursing and allied health care, maritime services, and other areas of international business. JEEP began in June 2009 and is now being implemented in 22 colleges and universities. To date, more than 11,000 students have enrolled in the program. The GEM Program is implemented under the oversight of the Mindanao Development Authority. GEM
